News, Media, and its Influence on Society
The News in the 1970s
The press had a large role in the 1970s, as they had the responsibility of reporting many important issues and events to the American people. Events such as the Oil Embargo, Fall of Saigon, and the Resignation of Nixon still affect our society today. Although the press still reports the news, the way they present these reports have evolved over time. With the progression of modern technology, change in culture, and the developments of different lifestyles, the press in the 1970s have had to adapt to the demands of the American population, such as switching to televised news, while still maintaining there role as the mediator of information to the people.
The News Now
Just like the 1970s, the role of the news media remains unchanged. Their sole role in society is to report what is happening around the world to the public so they can stay informed. Several news stories have been prominent recently, such as the worldwide economic recession, the war in Iraq and Afghanistan, and the recent election between Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. Even though these stories may appear differently than in the 1970s, the news organizations still share similarities in the how they broadcast the news. For example, the media in both generations use the newspapers and television to tell the news. However, there has been the inevitable expansion of the news into the internet in this modern time.
